READING! “My” for Wednesday, July 29th

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m now starting each day’s “My” post with a quote from Franciscan Father Richard Rohr’s daily email that I receive from his Center For Action and Contemplation.

As I start my day with this rich wisdom and share it with you, I hope it helps your day to be the best it can be!

The Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (born 1926) is one of the world’s most influential spiritual teachers. During the Vietnam War, his work for peace brought him into friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thomas Merton, and other Christians who shared his belief that peace must be who we are, not just something we demand. Thich Nhat Hanh teaches:

I like to use the example of a small boat crossing the Gulf of Siam.

In Vietnam, there are many people, called boat people, who leave the country in small boats.

Often the boats are caught in rough seas or storms, the people may panic, and boats can sink.

But if even one person aboard can remain calm, lucid, knowing what to do and what not to do, he or she can help the boat survive.

His or her expression—face, voice—communicates clarity and calmness, and people have trust in that person. They will listen to what he or she says.

One such person can save the lives of many.

And James Hohmann in today’s episode of the Daily 202 Big Idea Podcast focuses on how cases of COVID are growing in the midwest and the first state mentioned in the list is my home state of Ohio. And Hohmann relays a story that our Gov. Dewine told about how a car of four people traveling together for 45 minutes led to multiple cases including hospitalizations and business shut-downs.

Three years ago this week my family and I were in the San Francisco Bay Area on vacation.

I’m ending posts this week with memorable photos from that trip:

The bottle of wine is from the winery where I work my second job. This photo is part of a “where’s the bottle” series.
